Betting Systems

Those of you who have been studying the game of roulette for a while are likely to have your own favourite system. Here in alphabetical order, are a few of the most common.

The D'Alembert System relies on the statistical probability that, with an even-money bet, you will eventually reach equilibrium when the probability comes true. Thus, over any given 100 spins of a coin, there is a reasonable chance that you will arrive at 50 heads and 50 tails. So, if you decide to bet red/black with a standard dollar bet, say, $5, you add one unit to your last bet, and take one unit away if you win. This would be a good system if the real odds were 50%. But with the presence of one or two zeros depending on which game you are playing, this system cannot save you from losing in the long run.

The Fibonacci System is a set of numbers where each new number is the sum of the two preceding it. So if we start a sequence with one, it goes 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21 and so on until you win. When you win, you remove the last two numbers from the sequence (i.e. the amount of your previous bet) and continue the progression. As against some of the other system, the escalation of the amount bet is relatively slow and you are unlikely to run up against the table limit before you break the losing streak with a win. However, if you do have a long losing streak, you will not get back all your losses. This is just a more civilized way of limiting your losses.

The Paroli System reverses the Martingale System by doubling the bet when you win rather than when you lose. In effect, you are betting that you are going to have a winning streak on, say, red or even or high, and you drop back to your original bet when you lose. This maximizes your profits and cuts your losses, except that prudence dictates you have a cut-off when you take your profits and walk away from the table. If you do not, you will simply plough back all your winnings and end up losing.

There is a variation on this system in which you assume that you can never win more than four times in a row. This is the 1326 System in which you decide on the basic dollar value of your bet, say, $3. In each four spins of the wheel, you therefore bet the sequence of $3,9,6,18. Thus, if you win the first round, you have $6 on the table and add a further $3. If the $9 wins, you have $18 and take $12 of profit off the table for the third bet. If the $6 wins, you have $12 on the table and add a further $6. If the $18 wins, you take the $33 and start again with a $3 bet. You can do the math on what happens in the sequence if you lose one or more of the bets.
